A boat lift is a mechanism used to raise a boat above the water, either at a private dock or in a marina. Keeping a boat on a lift has many benefits versus keeping it moored at the dock and in the water.
The first is security. You’ll never have to worry about a line coming undone, the boat being slammed against the pier by waves or a storm, or the boat sinking at the dock if the bilge pump fails. Because the potential for marine development is reduced when the boat is kept out of the water, you may not need to apply bottom paint.
You’ll also be preserving the boat and drive from corrosion, which is particularly important in saline water. A boat kept on a raise is less prone to hull discoloration, dents, and scratches, thus a lift may even add long-term value to the boat. A boat lift with a cover or canopy can assist keep the boat clean and shielded from sun fading. Keeping a boat in the water is also much more convenient than launching from a trailer before each trip.
To function correctly, almost all applications will require a minimum of 13” of water or more. Standard installations will typically have no more than five feet of water and a depth differential of 36” or less from front to back. Any deviation from these specifications will almost always necessitate the use of extension legs.
Hydraulic boat lifts are frequently left in over the winter. In places where ice flows aren’t a problem, this is conceivable. It is, however, only feasible if the lines are thoroughly flushed to remove any moisture and the hydraulic fluid is designed for winter weather conditions.
Moving a boat lift on land involves a little more effort and disassembly, but it’s also very straightforward. Simply dismantle the lift in the reverse sequence of the floating dock construction instructions until the system is compact enough to carry.
